Twice exceptional, commonly referred to as 2e, are individuals who are gifted and present with learning difficulties or other disabilities such as (but not limited to) ADHD, Tourette's, ASD, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and Emotional Disabilities.
Identification of all of your child's needs including areas where they need support and resources for difficulties as well as their strengths is important. If your child is a 2e child, focusing on one area of need, gifted or special education alone, may not be in the best interest of your child.
SPECIAL EDUCATION IDENTIFICATION
Federally, special education identification is mandated through Child Find. In Arizona, it is also required that gifted services be provided to children who qualify as gifted.
The most recent passage of ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act (2015)), which replaces NCLB (No Child Left Behind Act) as a federally mandated law includes a Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
"This approach to teaching aims to meet the needs of all students, including those with learning and attention issues." (Understood.otg). The law also encourages states to expand personalized learning for ALL students. To see the differences between NCLB and ESSA, click here.
We also offer our parent coaching services aimed at teaching you how to better handle your child's condition(s) in an effective and positive manner.
